“Just a small town girl, living in a lonely world.” Oh wait no strike that! Hello there. Wow people actually visit this page. I guess I should write something so. Ok here goes.
I am married to my wonderful wife Debbie and we have a very loverly Golden Cocker Spaniel named Elmo. Apart from photography I am a self-confessed geek, loving all things Apple and a bit of an aficionado on Scottish Whiskeys – particularly the Speyside’s.
I would describe myself as a creative genius trapped in geeks body. By day I do stuff with things (at least thats how someone described me), but at all other times you can typically see me with a camera in hand, actually a camera, some lenses, a tripod and a few filters to be precise
I should probably state this now! I’m an all digital photographer and proud of it, there I said it. I shall probably be burnt at the stake for that! See after many years spent experimenting with film in my teens and feeling deeply dissatisfied with the results I lost my way somewhat with photography during my 20′s, focusing on many other interests in life. In fact it was only during my honeymoon in 2006 when I picked up a Canon 400D in Tokyo before travling to Australia, Fiji and Bangkok did I rediscover my love of the art form. I know, if I couldn’t find it in those places there was no hope for me.
For me digital photography has provided ‘the something missing’ with the film experiences of my teens. Maybe that ‘something’ missing is the marrying of the art-form with my inner geek? I haven’t looked back since that day and have been refining my technique ever since. I have found photography affords me the opportunity to share my view on life around me. It has in many ways reconnected me with nature. I now notice the tiniest of details in the natural world, often times missed in the rush of modern life.
You may have noticed my tagline “…capturing moments of beauty in life…”, I suppose this could be described as my vision statement. Below I have tried to articulate why this vision and the words it contains are, both important to me and define me as a photographer.
capturing
Definition: recording or expressing accurately in words or pictures.
I had a very different description for this a year ago. Indeed I pondered whether this continued to be the correct word, and should I use interpret instead. I decided it was still the right word to use. My aim continues to be to accurately capture what I see. However as I have refined my art I now realise the desire goes beyond what I see and aims to capture what I felt also. I’ll let you be the judge of my success.
moments
Definition: a brief period of time.
Henri Cartier-Bresson coined the now famous phrase “the decisive moment” and I think it is incredibly powerful not just within the Street Photography genre where he is so revered. It is just as true when photographing animals or capturing a sunrise, these are fleeting and often missed unless you are purposefully seeking them out.
beauty
Definition: a combination of qualities that delights the aesthetic senses
My objective is to capture beauty and of course this is interpretive as it is beauty through my eyes. This may be as simple as a delicate petal or a grand landscape, man or man-made. The one thing you will not see from me is journalistic type photography, there is enough pain and misery in life and I do not wish to actively seek it out. Is this overly simplistic? Probably, but I’m ok with that.
life
Definition: well the way I see it that’s really up to each of us to define
That thing that passes us by in an instant if we are not careful. Photography has offered me an opportunity to slow moments in my life down, they may be fleeting in an otherwise busy life but I am very grateful for them. We hear it from so many different fronts that we need to slow our lives down, or our lives pass us by so any opportunity to change that is welcome in my book.
