”If you go down to the woods today, You’re sure of a big surprise” ~ Jimmy Kennedy
Well I’m pretty certain we won’t find any Teddy Bears in these Woods but there are plenty of Ancient Gnarled Oaks to be seen. That in and of itself is pretty unique in Dublin. While Dublin has lots and lots of forests the vast majority of them are young pine forests that are regularly harvested. I don’t know about you but I don’t find the Pine Tree particularly interesting as a photographic subject. So this little wood near the Hell Fire Club in the Dublin Mountains is a real treasure.
The Massy Estate was once the site of one of the great houses of Ireland last owned by the Massy family. Today however there is nothing left of the house and the gardens are overgrown but thankfully the surrounding woodland has been preserved and maintained by Coilte. Along with the aforementioned Oaks you can also find Sequoia, California Redwood, Lime and Monkey Puzzle. There are also animals to be found in the woods including Sika Deer, Badger, Grouse, Red Squirrel, Fox and many birds… but no bears!
As this is a 3×1 Panoramic photograph I appreciate that the above small image may not do it justice. If you pop over to my Google+ page you can find a much Larger Version of the image posted.
