A Dublin Landscape | The Curious Cow – Dublin Mountains, Ireland

A curious cow looks at the viewer while the sun sets casting soft light across an Irish landscape. Click on the Image to see a larger version, and to purchase/license.

On Tuesday I posted an image taken during sunset in the Dublin Mountains and while that was the image I travelled out to capture I decided to take a wander around the hillside to see if anything else caught my eye. I walked further up the hill to see if there was another vantage point to shoot the Sugerloaf and was kneeling down looking through the viewfinder when this cow decides to wander into my frame. Whether he knowingly wanted to be a model or not I certainly got him to ‘work it’ in front of the lens :)

As described I did not have a lot of time so there was no way I could have pulled out my tripod. The light was beginning to drop fast so I was forced to push the ISO up to 400 to get a fast enough shutter speed for handheld. I chose as narrow an aperture as I could afford to ensure as much of the field was acceptably sharp.

Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Lens: Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
Exposure: 1/40
Aperture: f/7.1
Focal Length: 40mm
ISO Speed: 400

Indeed, cows are usually very willingly posing. Ran into a group of four though once at Lands’ End. They were a little too curious for my taste then though.

    Lovely light in the image.

Ha, the key is to see if they’re cows or bulls/bullocks. Stay away from the latter :-)

Hmmm… Maybe I should have checked that. Their horns were slightly irritating though.
